A Rich History of Excellent Service
In 1982, Jim and Lavonne Sutton had a dream to start their own hauling business, so they bought a truck and Sutton Trucking, Inc. was established. Jim started hauling cement to small Redi-Mix companies and he became very popular because of his great personality and his on-time deliveries. His motto was: “If I’m late, the freight is free”.
Within the year, the company began to grow and they purchased another truck and hired a local driver named Leroy. Also in that first year, their older son, Jeff, bought his own truck and came to work with them. In 1985, their younger son, John, started working for the company in the Bookkeeping department with Lavonne and then in 1996, John moved into Dispatching to work with Jim.
From 1982 to 2004, the company grew to 25 trucks and 32 employees and Jim and Lavonne decided to slow down and enjoy life. In 2004, they sold the company to their sons and started traveling. Then in 2009, this family-owned company lost their leader, friend, and mentor, Jim Sutton, to cancer. Lavonne is still very active in the company helping her sons carry on their father’s legacy.
Since purchasing the company in 2004, Jeff and John have grown the Fleet to 60 trucks and 72 employees. In 2013, they opened a new terminal in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and in 2014, they bought property and started planning the construction of a new terminal in Lee’s Summit, MO.
In March of 2018, the company moved into its new state of the art headquarters in Lee’s Summit, MO, and continues to hold true to the heritage of the founders.
The history of Sutton Trucking’s success over the last 35+ years is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of its employees, friends, and the family.
